Participate in Research at Northwestern University on Text Messaging to Support Young Adult Mental Health

IRB Study Number: STU00214822

The purpose of this study is to evaluate an automated text messaging (a.k.a. SMS) platform that delivers tips, information, and strategies to help adults manage their depression and anxiety symptoms. This study focuses on adults who currently are experiencing depression or anxiety symptoms, are not receiving psychotherapy for their depressive or anxiety symptoms and aren’t particularly interested in seeking psychotherapy right now. Information from this study will help guide our design of a digital tool.

As part of this study, you will be randomly assigned to use one of 3 8-week long automated text messaging programs:

  1. An interactive text messaging program that uses machine learning to personalize messages to you based on your preferences and the types of messages with which you interact.
  2. An interactive text messaging program that does NOT personalize messages to your preferences or interactions.
  3. An 8-week automated series of messages on different strategies relevant to managing depression and anxiety symptoms.

Depending on how frequently you interact with the program, you may also be randomly assigned to receive messages from a human coach. Coach support is designed to help you use the texting program and may include messages that help you set goals, apply skills, and troubleshoot technical issues.

Study participation would last approximately 16 weeks.

  • If enrolled, you will be asked to:
  • Use your own smartphone to access and interact with the texting-based intervention.
  • Complete online questionnaires that assess your mood and symptoms at various points throughout the study
  • Stay in touch with study staff by phone, email and/or text or direct message.

You may also be asked to:

  • Participate in a one-hour-long interview.
