Technology Design Opportunities for Young Adults who Self-injure:
Online Longitudinal Usability Testing.

The purpose of this study is to gather initial input on a digital tool designed to support young adults (18 – 24 years old) in managing their self-injury and related mental health symptoms after 8 weeks use. Feedback from this study will be used to refine the tool to meet with young adults’ preferences, experiences, and needs.

* Note: Depending on which state you reside in, the age to consent to research may be 19 years of age.

Total study duration is expected to be 8 weeks.  If enrolled, you will be asked to;

  • engage in 1 set up phone call with research staff
  • use an app on your smartphone for 8 weeks
  • complete online questionnaires at 3 timepoints (study start, 4 and 8 weeks)
  • complete 2 45-minute interviews (week 4 and 8).

Eligible participants may be compensated up to $100 via an Amazon gift card for completing each of the following: baseline measures and the initial set-up call ($20), assessment at week 4 ($20) and 8 ($20), and interviews at week 4 ($20) and 8 ($20).

This study is for individuals:

  • Who are US Citizens or Residents
  • Who are 18-24 years old*
    • *participants who reside in Nebraska must be at least 19 years old  
  • Who own a smartphone
  • Who report current engagement in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI; e.g., cutting, burning), as defined as NSSI on 2 or more days in past month
  • Not currently in treatment for mental health symptoms

If one or more of the criteria described above are not met, you will not be eligible to participate in the current study.
